Third Essay Contest 2020/21

The winning essay in the third essay contest was "Dangerous Childhood: On Agency, Risk and Hazard in Poor Children's Representation in Nineteenth-Century Paris" by Or Aroch (class of 2021). Or chose to donate the 1,000 shekel prize to the Common Ground Association. The full essay (in Hebrew) is available at the bottom of the page.

Here are a few words from Or about the "Common Ground Association":

"Common Ground" is an association that seeks to promote gender equality in the educational field by fostering critical perspectives about gender stereotypes in the Israeli education system. Their activity includes workshops with students, educators and parents and spreading academic-based knowledge about gender biases to the general public.

As I emphasized in the essay's summary, the connection between the past representations and today's reality lies in the need for critical thinking when engaging in educational activities or scholarship. "Common Ground" association makes great efforts to encourage young people to adopt a gendered point of view about their lives and thus contributes to the promotion of critical thinking and the general endeavor to change our world for the better.
